If you’re wondering where the town’s name came from… Underneath the bridge on Mercer Street are natural springs with limestone ledges that were once covered with lush ferns. These springs were a gathering place for the Tonkawa Indians and a source of water for settlers. These fern-covered ledges would drip water into the springs, giving the town its name. In 1881, William Thomas Chapman laid out the plan for the town of Dripping Springs. He made Mercer Street the main street and named it after his son, Mercer Chapman. Today Mercer Street runs through one of the city’s three historic districts and is a thriving retail and entertainment area. You’ll find many roads in Dripping Springs named after our forefathers and notable residents as well as those that simply begin with “Ranch Road” and “Farm to Market.”
